How To Help A Struggling Mom

The other day, an article from a popular motherhood blog came across my Facebook feed after a friend of mine commented on it. It was one of those “open letters” that are really just thinly veiled excuses to rant. They’re everywhere: questionably authentic encounters used to spout off and incite controversy for pageviews. Normally, I would have rolled my eyes at the obvious clickbait and kept on scrolling. This time, however, I got sucked in.

Why Am I So Tired?

My beautiful, tow-headed three-year-old son attempted to start his morning at 4 AM the other day. It was, admittedly, early; even for him. His customary roll-call is between 6 and 6:30, although he will occasionally snooze for another decadent hour. This usually depends upon a few things: the phase of the moon, the position of the stars, and whether or not you perform the bedtime ceremony precisely. However, there is no way to know if you’ve done it properly till the next morning so, basically, you have no control whatsoever.

Tips For Dealing With Picky Eating

I was that kid who used to get caught trying to feed their green beans to the dog under the table. As I’m sure you can imagine, she didn’t want them either. It's Ok To Have A Clean House

In our attempt to lift the burden of tidiness from mothers’ sagging shoulders, have we created an altogether different problem? I’ve begun to notice a growing sentiment that a good mother spends time playing with her children, and only playing with her children. Washing dishes or folding laundry is time that could’ve been spent playing dress up or building train tracks. We tally up the summers, the weekends, the days remaining until our little birds turn eighteen and take flight, and we resolve to hoard them like the toddler who hates sharing her Cheerios.

Baring My Soul

It’s funny, isn’t it, how humans close ourselves off from each other? We’re forever pitching camps of “us” and “them.” Couples and singles. Blue collar and white collar. Working moms and stay at home moms. To be sure, it’s our nature to categorize, but we have weaponized the concept. Brick by brick, we build little fortresses out of our differences and peer over them in suspicion.
